A yearlong leadership development fellowship, established in 1974, that places emerging American professionals into work placements across Asia combined with language training and cultural immersion. Placements span professional fields rather than area studies, including public health, environmental science, economic development and the arts, so it is a route for science and engineering graduates who want an applied international year rather than a research posting. The programme explicitly selects for exploratory curiosity, adaptability and commitment to service rather than prior Asia expertise. Applications are made through participating nominating institutions and the programme is currently accepting candidates through its application portal.
