About This Program

An early-career faculty award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and one of the largest single commitments to an individual scientist in US biomedical research. Scholars become HHMI employees while keeping their academic appointments and running their labs at their host institutions, and receive up to ten years of support contingent on a successful midpoint evaluation. The award covers full salary and benefits, a research budget, tailored professional development, and eligibility for the HHMI capital equipment programme. Applications open November 3, 2026 and close December 15, 2026, run as a single combined competition with the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program, with semifinalist interviews and recorded presentations through late 2027.
