A federal scholarship for undergraduates headed into public service careers, awarded to students in their penultimate year of study, or their final year if they are graduating in three years or fewer. The 2026 cohort was 55 students from 48 institutions, which makes it one of the more selective national awards. It is open to STEM candidates whose intended careers sit in public service - environmental policy, public health, energy, science policy, government engineering and similar - and Truman Scholars join a lasting network with access to graduate funding and federal service pathways. Applicants must be US citizens, US nationals resident in American Samoa, or expect citizenship by the award date, and must be nominated by their institution. For the 2027 cycle materials are due 2 February 2027, finalists are named 15 February, interviews run from 1 March to 15 April, and scholars are announced 23 April.
