A competitive ten-week summer internship run by the Office of Naval Research that places students in Department of the Navy laboratories to work on real naval research, with more than 800 placements across 62 laboratories nationwide. Interns are selected on academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and career and research interests, and are mentored by Navy scientists and engineers; many participants go on to careers within the Department of the Navy. Stipends for the ten weeks, paid bi-weekly from May to August, are $7,500 for new undergraduates, $9,000 for returning undergraduates and $11,500 for graduate students. Applicants must be US citizens (permanent resident status is considered at some laboratories) and sophomore through senior undergraduates or graduate students at a participating university.
