A paid 10-week summer research internship placing students inside NOAA's operational science offices. Interns receive $6,000 in compensation along with furnished housing, a travel allowance, transportation subsidies and payment of conference abstract fees, and present their work at an end-of-programme symposium. Placements span NOAA's line offices including the National Weather Service, the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, NESDIS, the National Ocean Service, NOAA Fisheries and the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, so projects range across meteorology, oceanography, climate modelling, fisheries science, remote sensing and data science. It is open to sophomore- and junior-level undergraduates and graduate students of any level studying a STEM field relevant to NOAA's mission. The 2026 class placed 60 interns across 20 locations and six line offices, finishing August 7, 2026.
