Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR)
A long-running undergraduate research initiative of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR) in Mumbai, launched in 2004 to promote undergraduate research and laboratory training in India. Students first attend an exposure-cum-enrichment camp covering frontier research areas, core concepts, experimental planning and decision making, comprehension of scientific papers, and problem solving; a subset are then selected for NIUS proto-research projects that run across roughly three successive semesters through two to three further project camps. Mentors are drawn from HBCSE faculty plus researchers at BARC, TIFR, ICT Mumbai, the IISERs, IIT Bombay, NCRA Pune, PRL Ahmedabad and the University of Pune, together with local college teachers. Between 2004 and March 2026 the programme has run 67 exposure camps followed by 167 project camps.
