About This Program

The DEBUT Challenge, run by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering with VentureWell, asks undergraduate teams to design and prototype solutions to unmet health and clinical problems. Teams of three to eight full-time undergraduates compete, with at least one member majoring in biomedical engineering or bioengineering, though exceptions apply where an institution has no such programme and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. The prize pool is substantial: NIBIB primary prizes of $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000, eight category awards of $15,000 each covering HIV/AIDS, low-resource healthcare, cancer, rehabilitation technologies, nursing, kidney disease, women's health and aging, a $10,000 and two $5,000 VentureWell prizes, and five $1,000 honourable mentions. Winners also gain access to the dC3i commercialisation training programme and potential NIH campus visits.
