A paid summer research internship of at least eight weeks between May and September in National Cancer Institute laboratories, with in-person sites in Bethesda, Shady Grove and Frederick, Maryland. Compensation is set by academic level. Open to US citizens and permanent residents at least 18 years old by the summer start who are high school seniors (newly eligible following the merger with the high school programme), enrolled at least half-time as undergraduate, graduate or professional students, or accepted to a graduate programme for the autumn. Applications open in early December and close in mid-February, with selections notified by 1 April. There is no central selection committee: applicants apply through the NIH OITE system and then contact individual investigators, who fund and choose their own interns.
