About This Program

A multi-institutional South African training programme funded by DSI-NRF and running since 2003 across three nodes: the University of Cape Town, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and North West University. It delivers honours (one or two years) and master's (two years) degrees in astrophysics and space science and feeds a pipeline into PhD study. Entry requires a BSc in physics, astronomy, astrophysics or cosmology, with physics and mathematics or applied mathematics completed to at least second-year level. South African students qualify for bursaries covering full cost of study where total gross household income is at or below R300,000 a year, and partial cost otherwise; awards run from honours through completion of the master's, which may be taken at any node or at a partnering South African university with a suitable project. More than 300 students have completed the honours degree and over 140 the master's.
