Paid internships and externships at Monterey Bay Aquarium for undergraduate and graduate students, spanning animal care, education, exhibit development, research, conservation and guest experience. Placements are available both over the summer and during the academic year, and every internship and externship offered is a paid position rather than a volunteer placement. The aquarium's programme explicitly works to recruit qualified students from underrepresented communities, and interns work on real projects tied to the institution's ocean conservation mission, including work connected to its Seafood Watch and sea otter and kelp forest recovery efforts. Aquariums, zoos and natural history museums are significant employers of marine biology and environmental science graduates but rarely appear in STEM opportunity listings.
