James Madison University
An NSF Division of Chemistry REU site at James Madison University that puts Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, hearing students and American Sign Language interpreting students into the same chemistry research cohort, so both groups learn in an environment without communication barriers and the pool of interpreters comfortable in STEM settings grows. Research covers the major sub-disciplines of chemistry with expertise centred on synthesis, biophysical chemistry and materials, and mentors include a visiting faculty member from Gallaudet University. Participants are drawn largely from institutions with limited research infrastructure.
