The Indian Health Service funds American Indian and Alaska Native students across three distinct scholarships in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health programme. The Preparatory Scholarship supports undergraduates taking the preparatory or prerequisite coursework that leads into a health professions degree. The Pre-Graduate Scholarship supports pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-nursing and related undergraduate coursework. The Health Professions Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students already enrolled in an eligible health profession degree programme, with recipients committing to full-time clinical practice after completing academic or post-graduate clinical training. Members and, for the first two, descendants of federally recognised, state-recognised and terminated tribes qualify. Applications run through the IHS Scholar Portal.
