Established in 1969 and awarded by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society for outstanding human factors research carried out while enrolled in an academic programme and presented as a paper or poster at ASPIRE, the HFES International Annual Meeting. The award carries $2,000 and a certificate. Named for Alphonse Chapanis, one of the founders of the discipline.
