A twelve-week paid summer internship at Esri, the company behind ArcGIS and the dominant vendor in geographic information systems, based at its Redlands, California headquarters or a US regional office. Open to third- and fourth-year undergraduates, master's students and PhD students, with flexible start and end dates to fit around academic terms. Interns work on real projects rather than shadow work, with one-to-one mentoring, professional development workshops, a weekend intern hackathon and a standing weekly programme of technical and networking events. Applications are generally accepted September 1 through December 31 each year and positions are filled as qualified candidates are identified, so early applications have a real advantage. Esri also runs a separate year-round student assistantship programme staffing its conferences. Geospatial and GIS careers are thinly covered by most STEM directories despite being a large employer of environmental science, geography and computer science graduates.
