A national student design competition run by the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development, challenging interdisciplinary teams of undergraduate and graduate students to design science-based solutions to environmental and public health problems. The competition runs in two phases: Phase I grants of up to $15,000 fund a proof of concept, and teams that complete Phase I successfully may apply for a Phase II grant of up to $75,000 over two years to move the design toward the market. The 15th annual round anticipated roughly 20 Phase I awards and 4 Phase II awards from a total pool of about $600,000. Grants are made to accredited US colleges and universities, including institutions in US territories, which apply on behalf of their student teams through Grants.gov; students join by forming a team with a faculty advisor at a participating institution.
