The Department of War (formerly Department of Defense) programme that lets service members spend up to their final 180 days of service in a civilian internship, apprenticeship or industry training placement while still drawing military pay and benefits. Placements span engineering, IT, cybersecurity, manufacturing, logistics and many other high-demand fields, and the programme is the umbrella under which many named tech fellowships operate. As of Q4 2026 the programme lists 11,649 position announcements from 6,152 approved industry providers, searchable through a locations map on the official site. Service members apply through individual providers with command approval; providers apply to join during set enrolment windows, with the fall window running October 1 to December 1.
