A US Department of State programme, implemented by American Councils for International Education, that delivers the equivalent of one year of language study in eight weeks of intensive overseas instruction and cultural immersion. Nine languages are offered: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili. It is open to US undergraduate and graduate students across all fields with no requirement for prior study in most languages, and it deliberately recruits from science and engineering as well as the humanities - language capability in these regions is a direct route into federal research, national-security technical work and international engineering programmes. It completes the set of major US government international awards alongside Gilman, Boren and Fulbright.
