Founded in 2008 and formally established in 2012, BIT describes itself as the largest community and media organisation for Black people in the technology industry. It runs city chapters with local events, a mentorship programme, a technology job board, the annual BITCon conference, and media output including the BIT Tech Talk podcast series and BITVids.
