About This Program

A single USD 5,000 award from the American Planning Association Foundation, restricted to graduate planning students at five named institutions - Columbia, Harvard, MIT, the New School and the University of Pennsylvania - and requiring nomination by the department chair rather than direct application. Applicants must be US citizens. Named for Charles Abrams, the housing economist and planner whose work on slum clearance and self-help housing shaped mid-century international housing policy. Because it is nomination-only and limited to five schools, students at those programmes should raise it with their department directly; it will not appear in any application they submit themselves.
