The American Legion runs a portfolio of national scholarships rather than a single award. The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is open to high school juniors and seniors attending Boys State or Girls State who are direct descendants of wartime veterans. The Legacy Scholarship funds the children of post-9/11 fallen service members and of post-9/11 veterans rated at 50 per cent or higher VA disability. Others include the Baseball Scholarship ($500 to $5,000 a year), the Oratorical Contest with finalist awards of $20,000 to $25,000, the Eagle Scout of the Year award ($10,000 to the winner and $2,500 to each of three runners-up), the Junior Shooting Sports Scholarship ($5,000 in each of the Precision and Sporter categories) and nine ANAVICUS scholarships of $1,500. State departments administer many additional awards through their own scholarship coordinators.
