The Akamai Internship Program places college students from Hawai'i in summer projects at the major telescopes on Maunakea and Haleakala and at other Hawai'i STEM employers, with the explicit aim of building a local technical workforce for the islands' observatory and technology sector. Host sites named by the programme include Subaru Telescope, W. M. Keck Observatory, Gemini Observatory, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope and the University of Hawai'i Institute for Astronomy. Interns receive a $4,600 stipend, housing where needed, paid travel from their home island and help with ground transport. The programme deliberately accepts students from community colleges as well as four-year universities and across a range of STEM majors, not astronomy alone; more than 500 students from Hawai'i have taken part. The 2027 cohort is to be announced.
