The American Association for the Advancement of Science places undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities into ten-week paid STEMM internships with industry, university research groups and federal agencies. Eligible study areas run across astronomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, microbiology, neuroscience, statistics, computer science, and mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineering. Applicants must have a disability, apparent or non-apparent, and be authorised to work in the United States. Running since 1996, the programme has placed more than 600 interns and AAAS reports that 85 percent of alumni now work as scientists or engineers. Placements are matched to a student's own skills and interests rather than drawn from a fixed project list, which is unusual among disability-specific STEM pipelines.
